Student-led Walkout Tomorrow
Dear middle and high school students,

We expect some students to participate in a student-led walkout and march on Friday afternoon. From what we know, the action is intended to be peaceful and to elevate the cause of Palestinians. We expect students to come to the Prophet Education Center (501 N Dixon St) around 3:15 pm on Friday (3/15). This is not a district-sponsored event, and staff will not be supervising students who participate.

The war between Israel and Hamas has affected many Portlanders in tangible, varied ways, and we recognize that some students feel a strong desire to advocate. Our district’s vision articulates our community’s goal for our graduates to become compassionate critical thinkers, able to collaborate to solve societal problems with attention to racial equity and social justice.

Safety is our top priority during walkouts and protests, and we also maintain our commitment to academic excellence. If students choose to leave school grounds, we follow existing district policies and laws regarding excused and unexcused absences. For absences to be excused, and for athletes to be eligible to play or practice:
  • ALL STUDENTS must make arrangements with their educators for addressing any missed school assignments (including quizzes, tests)
  • all HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS must share parent / guardian permission with their educators
  • all HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES must share parent / guardian permission with their school’s athletic director
  • all MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS must be signed out by their parents / guardians or another pre-authorized adult

If your student plans to participate, we ask that you please speak with them and make a plan. The conflict challenges us adults to exercise compassion and critical thought, and the collaborative problem-solving we want our children to learn. As they advocate, we hope you will encourage them to act in line with our policies and state laws, to be respectful of other members of our community, and to maximize this event’s potential as a learning experience.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jon Franco
