23-24 Innovation Studio Sponsored Projects: Two Ways to Get Involved!

JOIN A DESIGN TEAM
Do you want to confront complex challenges in our system? Do you find yourself dealing with the legacy of bad design, and longing for something different?

Do you want to lead with healing, center relationships, and reimagine power within Portland Public Schools?

If you answered “yes,” we invite you to join us at the design table! Design teams are gearing up to address challenges with:
  • Climate Justice, Energy, and Sustainability Engagement Culture 
  • Student Affinity, Leadership and Identity Development
  • Inclusive Classroom Culture
  • Parent/Caregiver Excellence in support of Black students
Each design team is recruiting members to participate. If you want to learn more about what a design team is and does, Watch the Introduction to Design Teams Micro-learning here! Follow the links, and read carefully before you apply to join a team. More information on joining each team can be found below.

ATTEND OUR FIRST ANNUAL INNOVATION SUMMIT: PRODUCTIVE DISRUPTION
As the official problem-solving accelerator of Portland Public Schools, the Innovation Studio is hosting its First Annual Innovation Summit to support these teams and the broader community of innovators. We aim to establish a premier learning experience, to inspire creativity, and to launch innovation project support.

Climate Justice, Energy, and Sustainability Engagement Culture 

Objectives: 
To create a culture of community engagement with climate justice, equity and action that empowers our present and future students to thrive in a climate-changed world by providing joyful, accessible and participatory opportunities for them to help guide the district in implementing the goals of the Climate Crisis Response Policy

Who we’re looking for: 
Community based organizations that focus on youth engagement in climate action and environmental justice, firms/think tanks that focus on radical imagination and design for climate resilience

Student Affinity, Leadership and Identity Development

Objectives: 
To create a administrative directive for sustainable student affinity groups across all K-12 schools Administrators, community based organizations, educators, students (8th grade and above)

To create a profile for the characteristics and attributes of an appropriate advisor 
To create a clear path for obtaining an advisor if no adults in the school community meet the advisor profile

Who we are looking for:
BIPOC students (8th grade and above), LGBTQIA students (8th grade and above), current advisors, parents, school administrators, school counselors and/or social workers, Senior Directors of Schools, Budget and/or payroll staff, community based organizations

Center for Black Student Excellence: Culture in the Classroom: When the Lesson Comes Alive Across Disciplines

Objectives: 
To establish collective understanding, instructional strategies, look fors, and the accompanying professional learning for the prioritized focus indicators of the Instructional Framework to drive better student outcomes, especially for Black and Native students.

Who we are looking for:
Administrators, community based organizations, educators, students (8th grade and above)

Center for Black Student Excellence: Emanating from the Home: Parent/ Caregiver Excellence Consortium 

Objectives: 
The Parent/ Caregiver Excellence Consortium program will create pathways for Black parents/caregivers and parents/caregivers of Black students to:
To build community for themselves and their children;
To learn about various supports to strengthen positive identity; 
To connect with PPS school leadership, and build capacity on issues that affect student life through Parent University.

Who we are looking for:
Non-Black parents and/or caregivers of Black children, Black parents and/or caregivers (including but not limited to grandparents, mothers, and fathers), community based organizations
