A Momentous Week for Our District

Dear students, staff, and families,

It is only Wednesday and this has already been a momentous week for our district.

  • On Monday our school board approved the budget for next school year after including an amendment to restore $1.8 million that had been cut from PPS contracts with Community Based Organizations. The board will meet June 3 to discuss the funding source for the restoration, and final adoption of the budget is scheduled for June 11.
  • On Tuesday afternoon, we announced the three finalists for our next superintendent.
  • On Tuesday evening, voters chose to invest in us by renewing our local option levy, which funds teaching and classroom support positions at every school in the district. I see this as a strong vote of confidence in our educators and our district, and I hope you do as well.

These decisions provide additional stability for Portland Public Schools during this time of transition to new leadership. Thank you for all the support you have shown me, our educators, and our students.

There is more work ahead. Last week, I joined other Oregon superintendents to raise awareness of Oregon’s education funding crisis. Portland voters have weighed in with their support. Now we must all continue working in unity for adequate state funding so our students can have the educational opportunities they need and deserve.

Respectfully,

Dr. Sandy Husk
Interim Superintendent
